Gear Position Indicator
I started working on a Gear Position Indicator system for the Kat at work the other day.. I have the board designed and the packaging figured out.. I'm going to have boards made and I'll assemble one for test.. It will have a remote mounted LED single digit numeric display mounted in my gauge pack.. I have to hunt down a 6-pin gear position sensor on flebay. Here is what i have so far.
The board layout.. I'm looking at a first run of 10 boards.
The board dimensions will be 2.27" x 1.40" and it will fit in this case..
The case is designed to hold the board in place. It will get holes drilled in it and grommets installed where cables pass thru
The case;
Dimensions (L x W x H) (in / mm)
2.50 x 1.63 x 0.80 in. / 63.50 x 41.40 x 20.32 mm

Re: Gear Position Indicator
I'm moving forward.. the boards are ordered and I should see them by the 19th...
I added the option of having the 7-segment display on the main board or have it remote mounted...
The next revision of my GPI will have the option of a 'shift counter'... its too late for this board run...

Re: Gear Position Indicator
I cant wait to get one in for test... and it will work on any bike... on the kats it will need the GS sensor.. the neutral wire is needed for the damned ignition interrupt... or the wire will need to get terminated to ground... so it will start... all my safety switches failed so its all bypassed...
a board level engineer friend of mine cleaned up my design and made some IC device improvements over the original design.. this is rev B. The small circuit to the right is for a SMT 7-seg display it will get cut off and the shape modified as needed to mount a remote display.

** Update**
The boards are done, they are being picked up and the one IC and the
programming socket will be soldered then programmed this weekend/early
next week, all the other board related parts have been ordered. The
cases are ordered as well.. all the parts should arrive next week.. when
I'm in San Diego for training so I wont be able to work with them until
the following week..
Re: Gear Position Indicator
Awesome Jim. I know if I was to put my mind to work I could come up with at least one good idea. I took physics in college but struggled in the lab side. The book work was no problem for me it was the lab work. I took 3 years of machine shop in high school so I know I can make things on a lathe. I really miss working with my hands to make things.
Re: Gear Position Indicator
I got the cases in while I was in San Diego.. the boards will be here on the 3rd, all the components are ordered.... It's getting close... Here is a pic of the boxes to give a better idea of just how small the electronics are...
Re: Gear Position Indicator
OK.. I got these 2 images from the programmer... he mounted the necessary devices to program and test and here are the results. I will be getting the balance of the parts next week to finish assembly.
The display portion of the board will be cut off and trimmed as necessary for custom mounting.
Enjoy...

Now that's sweet. Please post up prices and where you got the GS sensor from.

I have all my invoices.. I'll be posting a unit price in a day or so..
I will have the final 6 boards by weeks end for final assembly here... and ready to ship by next week.. right now I need that sensor to know which 6 pin connector I need to buy... there's 2 different 6 pin connectors..

Re: Gear Position Indicator
Jim where would I mount this on the pre98 750? Not a lot of places to mount something on the pre.
Re: Gear Position Indicator

Re: Gear Position Indicator
Here is the deal.....
I have 2 programming versions;
v1.0 has the "n"
v1.5 does not have the "n"
I have 2 units assembled and the other 2 will be done by next week. The other 6 will be here by then as well.
I
am waiting on the GS sensor to know which connector I need to order and
to verify if the GS sensor Neutral wire connector is the same as the
Kat unit.
Once I will have all of them assembled and ready to go, only then will I release them for shipping.
If I have to tweak the v1.0 units for the "n" timing I won't be shipping
them right away. The v1.5 units will be available for shipping as soon
as they are ready.
Both of these will keep the factory Neutral light in your dash functioning.
I have;
Qty. 2 - v1.0 units
Qty. 6 - v1.5 units
The
GPI will be shipped with the 7-segment Display as a separate board for
custom mounting in your dash or where ever. It will come with complete
install instructions.
The GPI unit is $101.39, first come first serve.
I can also provide the GS sensor at a pretty good price with the GPI unit as a kit for $161.35
If your interested in a GPI unit, Please do not PM me.

Great stuff! I knew of the use of the GS sensor but the board is one sick piece!
